Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
