Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
