Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
